Data Sources & Licensing

Last updated: 09/07/2026

Leana's food database is an aggregate of multiple data sources, each subject to a different license. This page explains where the data comes from and what rights you have over it.

1. Database structure

Leana's database combines nutritional data from several public and proprietary sources. Every food in the app lists, in the "Sources" section of its page, the original database it comes from.

2. ODbL-licensed data: OpenNutrition and OpenFoodFacts

Part of the nutritional data in Leana comes from OpenNutrition and OpenFoodFacts, two open-source databases released under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0. This license carries three main obligations:

  • Attribution — the original source is always cited on the food's page.
  • Share-Alike — any substantial extraction of this data must be released under an equivalent open license.
  • Free access — anyone can freely download this data, independently of Leana, directly from the original sources.

You can browse and download the original datasets on OpenNutrition and OpenFoodFacts, or contact the Leana team directly.

3. Other proprietary data and content

Beyond ODbL data, Leana's database includes foods drawn from additional proprietary databases that are entirely separate and independent from OpenNutrition and OpenFoodFacts. These are not enrichments, translations, or elaborations of ODbL data — they are distinct food entries, collected and maintained independently by Leana, with their own origin and verification process. This data is the property of Yungest Prodiges and is not subject to the ODbL license. The "Sources" section on each food's page always states whether the data comes from an ODbL database or a proprietary Leana database.

4. Requesting the open data
